Scooby is beginning to represent the attitude that has dogged me my entire life. I want to be an optimistic. I’ll go out of my way to look for reasons to be sunny. But deep, deep down I know there’s a 99 percent chance the roof is going to cave in.

See that still-green sprout just over his moldy left ear? I want it to be a sign of renewal. I just can’t let myself believe, though, that Scooby’s “growth” is fated for anything other than that great compost heap in the sky.
