Because it’s actually a novelty where we live to watch grass grow. And because I found a good price at a clearance sale after Christmas. And because Boots loves to walk around chanting, “Ch-ch-Chia. Ch-ch-ch-Chia pet” – sad, isn’t it? He’s like Rain Man when it comes to commercials.

For all those reasons, we present Chia Cam, a daily adventure in the Black Widow of Horticulture’s attempt to avoid killing yet another plant and breaking her little boys’ hearts again.

We’ll see how it goes. Believe me, if anyone can screw this up, I can.

We start by immersing Garfield and Scooby in a sink full of water. It amuses the guys greatly when  bubbles start popping out of the hole on top of the planters.

I explain that the bubbles are because the water is forcing the air out of the planter. “Is that why I toot in the bathtub?” Big Guy asks. “Does water go up my booty?”

Boots has no commercial jingle to counter with. He’s too young to remember “plop, plop, fizz, fizz.”

Next, the guys move on to spreading the seeds. “This is just like putting icing on a cake!” Boots says. “Can we eat it?”
