A brown belt for Big Guy – not that it’s important
Mon, 12/03/12 – 12:49 | Comments Off

It was testing week in karate and, as usual, Big Guy was under the gun. Not as much as he used to be, when he didn’t have a clue and had to frantically cram, but …

The freedom to eat pizza – (almost) any time and any place

We didn’t really have time to stop, and if we did Big Guy would miss his karate class. Still, a promise is a promise, so I let him make the call.
“Yes, yes, YES! Momma, I …

The mystery of Annie’s Naturals ketchup

I regularly recheck labels on products, even if we’ve been buying them for years, because you never know when ingredients or manufacturing processes are going to change.
It had never occurred to me to check the …

Give them a grilling for the holidays

It’s not exactly a seasonal favorite this time of year — except in parts of California and Florida where grills are rarely covered — but grilling recipes can be used indoors in the off season. …

Product review: Garlic-free Crystal hot sauce

I am not the hot sauce connoisseur in the house. That would be Dad, and I’m not so sure he’s as much connoisseur as addict. Honestly, I’ve seen him hit the fridge late at night …

Product review: Garlic-free ketchup and mustard

Here’s where the allergic life gets weird:I’ve been making ketchup and mustard for almost two years, ever since Big Guy’s garlic allergy was diagnosed.
Let me rephrase that: I’ve been trying to make ketchup and …

Easy egg-free chicken nuggets, fish sticks
Tuesday, 26 Aug, 2008 – 17:19 | Comments Off

The problem with Big Guy and store-bought fish sticks and nuggets is not so much the egg, but the ubiquitous garlic. And the problem with garlic is manufacturers don’t have to note it on ingredient …

Back on the ranch dressing

THE CHALLENGE: Big Guy loves salad, which is a major accomplishment for a picky 3-year-old. Many fat-free dressings – including Hidden Valley and Kraft – are made without eggs, so they were safe. Or at least they used to be – they’ve been banned in my house since the garlic allergy popped up, so please check the labels!

THE SOLUTION: Make your own. It’s not that hard.

ALSO GOOD FOR: Milk allergies if you substitute vegan sour cream and soy milk or soy if you’re sensitive enough to be bothered by soy oils.

1½ tbl parsley
1½ tbl onion or garlic powder
½ tbl dried chives
1 tsp dried tarragon
1 tsp tbl salt
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp pepper
Use 1 tablespoon of the mixture per cup of sour cream

Kids and Allergies: Why a kids and allergy blog?

We are a pathetic little allergy-plagued family. Well, at least two-thirds of us are.

Me: Pork, seafood, some fish (severe); chicken and rice (moderate but tolerable); 22 other foods (mild) and everything airborne I’ve ever been tested for.

Big Guy: egg, peanut, all tree nuts but almond and garlic (severe). Avoids Red Dye 40 and Yellow Dye 5 on the advice of his allergist.

Little Guy: none so far, but he has worrisome signs

So don’t invite us for breakfast – pancakes, bacon and eggs are out.

And don’t call and ask if we’d meet you for pizza – we could order no pepperoni at a place that uses an egg-free crust, but we’ll never find a sauce without garlic. And if you throw a birthday party, please don’t be
