Even Boots can see the beginning of the end now. The blooms aren’t as full as they were, and the red flower is brown around the edges.
“Why, Mommy? The ones at school are still giant and pretty,” he asks.
We talk about the possibilities: The lights are on at home longer than they are at school, and that makes the flowers hotter. Plus there was a cold snap over the weekend, and the heat kicked on at the house. There wouldn’t have been any heat at school.
The heat, I said, makes it harder for the flowers to get the water they need, and all living things need water to live.
He quickly made a guilt-stricken trip to check the hamsters.
