Egg in … popcorn?

I learned again this weekend that you can never let your guard down for one second when it comes to reading labels. Obviously, I needed the reminder, because I almost screwed up, bad.

Friday is movie night at our house, and that means popcorn and Rice Krispie treats. It’d been a long day this Friday, with sick, cranky kids and one more errand than good sense dictated was smart. So I grabbed a box of Act II Movie Theatre Butter microwave corn, threw it in the cart and went on my way.

For some reason, when I got home, label-reading paranoia kicked in. I read the ingredients first, and everything was OK. But then, in the separate allergens warning at the bottom: Contains egg, fish, milk.

Milk I can understand. But egg and fish? Shrimp popcorn Benedict? There must be some type of funky cross-contamination issue going on in that popcorn plant.

I ran back to the store, bought a box of Orville Redenbacher and breathed a sigh of relief at the bullet dodged. Until I noticed that Con Agra makes both Orville Redenbacher. Crud. What if they’re made in the same plant?

My first Google made me even more paranoid. At least one plant, in Ohio, produces other brands. But where was the Redenbacher made? I kept Googling until I found two ways to crack Con Agra’s product code. The plant is either the first four or the second four numbers on many products. Neither set matched on the Act II-Redenbacher boxes.

Con Agra’s Web site and customer assistance lines both swear they label for major allergens, and the Act II labeling seems to bear that out. And Big Guy has eaten Redenbacher many times without keeling over.

Still, there’s enough of a smidge of doubt left in my mind to make me want to switch back to stove-popped.
